Well, if Hermione Granger can say it, so can I. All joking aside, Emma Watson’s speech at the UN was amazing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-iFl4qhBsE). I highly recommend you listen to it. The main point was that men need to become advocates. This isnt a new theory, women have been pushing this for awhile. Besides my research, I am active in a group called in Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN). WEPAN is the nation’s leading organization and catalyst for transforming culture in engineering education to promote the success of all women. I am currently on the Knowledge Center Committee which puts out a newsletter (http://www.wepan.org/).
Back to feminism. This is a serious issue, but there are some things that are actually very comical about it.
Example: Urban Dictionary
someone who believes the radical notion that women are people.
if you believe that women and men should have equal rights, you are a feminist. there’s nothing “extreme” about it.
Urban dictionary in general is a fun, joking website. However, this time, I really agree with the definition. The word feminist or feminism, has take on a such a negative connotation. You dont have to be a man hating, ball busting, woman to be a feminist. We just want everyone to be treated fairly. And I mean everyone, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc. When I meet someone knew, of course, we all have those quick assessments. I try my best to let a person represent themselves based on their thoughts, actions, etc.
How about Webster’s Dictionary
: the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities
: organized activity in support of women’s rights and interests
So there it is, the crazy idea that women and men should be equal.
